Minecon After Dark

Minecon After Dark was a series of unofficial, late-night rave parties that coincided with the annual Minecon convention, celebrating the popular sandbox video game Minecraft. Originating in 2013 as small gatherings organized by attendees, these events quickly evolved into large-scale, semi-organized parties known for their immersive Minecraft-themed decorations and free-flowing availability of a modified, voxel-based form of MDMA known as 'Blockstasy'. The events became increasingly controversial due to the game's younger fanbase, leading to their eventual shutdown by Mojang Studios in 2019.

Origins and Rise

The first Minecon After Dark took place in Orlando, Florida, in 2013. It began as an informal gathering advertised through Minecraft fan forums, attracting a few hundred attendees. The following year, at Minecon Paris, the party grew significantly, with a makeshift DJ setup and rudimentary decorations reminiscent of Minecraft landscapes. It was also at this event that 'Blockstasy' first surfaced – a version of MDMA pressed into small, colored cubes, supposedly to mimic the game's iconic blocks.

The Cologne Minecon in 2015 marked the peak of the After Dark phenomenon. The party relocated to a large warehouse and featured professional lighting, sound systems, and elaborate Minecraft-themed stage designs. Word of mouth spread quickly, and over a thousand people attended, fueled by Blockstasy and the shared enthusiasm for Minecraft. This event solidified After Dark's reputation as an integral (though unsanctioned) part of the Minecon experience.

Blockstasy Controversy and Effects

Blockstasy, the nickname for the MDMA pills distributed at Minecon After Dark events, quickly became synonymous with the parties themselves. Its unique cube shape and various colors were an immediate hit among attendees, many of whom were under the legal drinking age. While its purported effects mirrored those of conventional MDMA—euphoria, enhanced empathy, and increased energy—reports also surfaced of amplified sensory distortion and disorientation, attributed by some to novel cutting agents used in its production.

Health concerns escalated following the Cologne event, with several attendees requiring medical attention due to dehydration, overheating, and adverse reactions to Blockstasy. This led to increased scrutiny from the media, law enforcement, and Mojang Studios, who expressed serious concerns about the safety and well-being of Minecon attendees.

Mojang's Response and Eventual Shutdown

Faced with growing public pressure and legal liabilities, Mojang Studios took decisive action to disassociate itself from Minecon After Dark. In 2016, they issued a formal statement condemning the parties and warning attendees of the potential dangers associated with illegal substances. Security at Minecon events was significantly increased, and efforts were made to prevent After Dark parties from being advertised or promoted within the convention venue.

Despite these efforts, After Dark persisted in Anaheim in 2016 and Chengdu in 2017, albeit in a more underground and decentralized form. However, Mojang's continued pressure, combined with increased police presence and stricter enforcement of drug laws, gradually diminished the parties' appeal. By 2019, with the rise of online communities and virtual events, Minecon After Dark faded into memory, becoming a cautionary tale of a beloved game colliding with the darker aspects of rave culture.
